Interesting. Of much more interest to me however, and ultimately to the electorate, is why they have failed so spectacularly to communicate their actions/policies/successes to us common people.
There can be no doubt that they arrived in power on a wave of social media. However, once in they appear to have simply abandoned said vehicle and of course with so much of the MSM looking to report negativity in order to shift tomorrows fish & chip wrappers it leaves the majority of us (non wrapper buyers or trusters) uninformed. As nature does, all information voids are then filled with negativity too in order to protect ourselves.
Why are Labour not investing in communications? Why are Labour not working flat out to combat the BS shared by those with the vested interests to see them fail? Why are Labour not leading political communications into a new age of electorate education and engagement?
So many questions, so few answers, so little concrete evidence of direction or even intention to base a decision in a few years to base our votes. God help our kids!
Hi Dave, thanks very much for your thoughtful comment (and time spent engaging with my work on this).
I agree with you. Labour did have the potential to have such a good start.
What I think is behind this is a total failure to actually be a Labour party. There will, of course, have been many who were just glad to vote for Labour because they had enough of 14-years of Tory. However, for many they were probably hoping Labour would have been a true Labour party. On that, clearly our FPTP system doesnt work, as it hands power to a minority (who simply have a small majority).
Yet, as the pull of Centrism dragged them towards the Centre/right, we have certainly seen the Overton Window shift.
On the media, I think that's a good analysis too, and is perhaps why they abandoned their left-ish policies (I also don't think Starmer has ever read Orwell's Animal Farm - as he certainly is more akin to Napoleon the pig in my view). He now has power and is intent on pulling the ladder up behind him.
Personally I'm an advocate of Konrad Adenauer (aka the Great Simplificator). His skill was driving to true root causes. From those single actions everything else radiates outwards causing multitudinous ripples & consequences which can be awfully distracting, time consuming and frankly useless in terms of efficient use of resource when being addressed. Root causes rule!
To me our situation (decline) has been a slow & frankly deliberate process of ignoring what's under our noses. To me this has happened due to, what I term, Empire Arrogance, in that we continue to act as if we still rule the planet and the rest of the globe is stupid. Our flat out refusal to learn from and to embrace betterment (change) seems anchored in our institutions (education, law & politics) so it's little wonder those who are a product of such are so deeply embedded & wedded to them. For them changing these foundations is tantamount to rape.
PR or Sortition are the only routes out of our deep dark hole. Formal disassociation with the US, and its negative influences across the board, would help us make that essential transition speedily which is why I am so pro Eastern influence as Eastern people take both pride and responsibility in and for their local situations.
Pretty much all of it (haha). I'd be interested to hear more about this, as It feeds into the work I want to do with my students this academic year on political ideologies.
Perhaps this could be a long form post over several days (as Im doing this week). Or, feel free to pick and follow your interest in a single blog?
Looking forward to whats upcoming. UBI would definitely be a win for labour.
I think your right!
