A New Chapter: Separating My Two Substack Blogs
That Sociologist & Aber Bespoke Art
Dear readers,
Over the past year, this blog — That Sociologist — has grown in ways I never quite expected. What began as a space to share thoughts on UK social policy, teaching, and research has organically evolved into a vibrant community of readers, students, and fellow thinkers. Alongside this, my photography practice has also blossomed, becoming a deeply personal and socially engaged extension of my academic work.
As both of these creative and intellectual journeys have grown so beautifully and so organically, I feel that it is now time to give each its own dedicated space to truly flourish.
🎓 That Sociologist
This blog will continue to be the home for my writing on UK social policy, sociology, pedagogy, and academic life. It remains a space for critical reflection, teaching resources, and commentary on the social world.
I have new and interesting ideas for this Substack too coming in the new year (I will be creating a special space for my new book about the poverty Industry, and downloadable resources used in teaching… plus other ideas).
📸 Aber Bespoke Art (the new Substack bog)
This will now function as a new & separate Substack — a blog and vlog dedicated to my socially engaged photography in and around North Wales. It’s where I’ll be sharing photo essays, visual reflections, behind-the-scenes content, and explorations of how photography can illuminate the social landscapes we inhabit.
From the ruins of Dorothea Quarry to the quiet power of Penrhyn’s history, this new space will allow me to dive deeper into the visual storytelling that complements my sociological work.
🌟 Join Me on Aber Bespoke Art
If you’ve enjoyed the photography shared here — or if you’re curious about how images can speak to social justice, memory, and place — I warmly invite you to subscribe to Aber Bespoke Art.
Your support means the world, and I’m excited to build this new space with you.
Thank you for being part of this journey — and for continuing to walk alongside me as both a sociologist and a photographer.
Warmly,
Dave Beck
